Saints set to bring large following to Blues clash at Monks Lane on saturday
Narrow V Belt DOUBLE winners Northampton Saints are expected to bring a massive following to Newbury’s Monks lane on Saturday as they bid to complete a perfect season. With 24 straight wins – plus last Saturday’s EDF National Trophy success over Exeter at Twickenham – under the belt so far, Saints are looking to erase memories of their narrow 24-23 squeak over Blues at Franklin’s Gardens last December when Newbury became the nearest team this season to end Northampton’s 100 per cent record.Saints coach Jim Mallinder has to juggle the desire for revenge and a perfect record with fielding a team on Monday night in their scheduled Guinness A League final, and he is likely to hold back some of his backs for that game, while fielding a powerful pack at Newbury. For Blues, scrum half Dan Smaje is likely to return and Blues hope that back row Tom brown will shake off a knock to take his place in the back row.“We are under no illusions,” said head coach Chris Dossett, “we know how good they are and how tough this will be. “But we are looking forward to this. We have forgotten about last week’s defeat at Rotherham. It is dead and buried. “Whatever happens, we are going to give it a lash.”Blues biggest crowd since the visit of Harlequins two years ago will have the chance to donate to the British Heart Foundation via the Stefan Czerpak Memorial Fund set up following the passing of the former Blues and England Colts coach 10 years ago. In addition to the collection, an auction will invite bidders to chase lots including a signed 2008 England shirt, Barbarians and Northampton shirts, two tickets for the England v Pacific Islands clash, two FA Cup final hospitality tickets and two nights in a private apartment in Mallorca. Admission is available on the day and gates open at noon. Under-nine and under-11 curtain-raising matches will be staged prior to the match, which kicks off at 3pm.
